Installing a Winfield on a 1930 Ford Model A and then Driving it!
Find out the difference between a typical carburetor and a Winfield Carburetor as Chris from Brauns Motorsports installs an updraft A Winfield on a 1930 Ford Model A, tunes it, and takes it for a drive. We remove the original Tillotson carburetor, lay it and the Winfield out so you can see the differences, then install the Winfield on the Model A. We also give some back story on Henry Ford and Ed Winfield’s relationship and tell you what to watch out for when you install your own. Then we start up the car, tune the idle, intermediate and highspeed, and take the car out for a test drive. Winfield Carburetor Air Screens Part 2: Machining a Slip-On Sleeve for an Air Cleaner
We make a prototype collar to attach a stainless-steel mesh air screen to the 90 degree air horn of an updraft A Winfield Carburetor. The screen cannot be mounted flush to the horn because butterfly movement clearance must be maintained. We machine a sleeve to fit the air horn, mount it to the carb with a small set screw and safety wire the screen to the sleeve. In the future we may redesign or copper plate it to match the original finish of the Winfields. This screen and collar set up was custom made for a customer who drives their Ford Model A up and down a rural dirt road. While this screen won’t filter out all dirt particles, it will prevent small stones and debris from getting in the barrel. Winfield Carburetor Air Screens Part 1: Machining A Press Die
We make our own die for pressing air screens for Winfield Carburetors. Air screens or filters were not typically made for early model carburetors. To manufacture our own, we machine a press die to use with an arbor press. We then shape the screen from mesh material which will keep out small rocks and large road particles. After machining the die pieces we case harden them and quench them in oil to seal them against corrosion and give them a nice looing finish. Then they are ready to use!
